Red and blue don't actually make a bright purple. You could get a dull mauve using that method, or you could mix a warm blue like ultramarine with a cool red like alizarin crimson, or, ideally, with magenta aka hot pink. Or you can get a tube of purple like dioxazine violet which is what I use. Just mix a small amount with white, and add a little warm blue or cool red until you have just what you want.
